A Month Teaching In
Bali With My Friend

My time in Bali really has given me the travel bug.

After graduating uni, my friend and I decided to spend a month teaching English in Bali – and I am so glad we went with The Mighty Roar. Neither of us had been to Asia before. For me, it was my first time travelling outside of Europe. I was naturally a little apprehensive, but The Mighty Roar team was fantastic. Prior to departure, my friend and I booked onto multiple zoom calls, fired off every question we could think of, and received clear, informed answers to all of them. It really helped put me at ease that the team was always at hand, and always very well-organised.

"If you’re thinking about doing the teaching volunteering programme in Bali with The Mighty Roar, you should absolutely take the plunge!"

When we arrived in Bali, one of the local team greeted us at the airport and drove us straight to the accommodation. The helpfulness and friendliness of the local team was consistently exceptional throughout the programme; they always went out of their way to ensure volunteers were well cared for and had the best experience. I particularly loved joining one of the local fishermen for a sunrise boat ride – it was so magical, and worth getting up early for.

We volunteered for two hours in the afternoons from Monday to Thursday, though Wednesday was reserved for sports or dancing. It was really nice that every volunteer was assigned their own class, so you got to know and bond with your students. I honestly enjoyed the volunteering so much more than I expected, as the staff and students were touchingly appreciative of the volunteers, and it was a fun challenge coming up with and delivering creative lessons.

Outside of volunteering, I loved the evenings spent with the other volunteers. One night a week, we all went to a small local bar to do karaoke, and on Wednesdays, we piled into a fantastic bar called Waawaa Weewees, where there was live music and a great DJ. These evenings gave us a lot of time to make friends with the other volunteers (as well as get in some all-important dancing and cheap drinks!)

I also adored the Exploring Bali trip which The Mighty Roar organised, and couldn’t recommend it more highly. We did so much in the span of three days, it ticked off every unmissable destination, and everything was really well planned out, so it was absolutely worth the money. Hiking Mount Batur – whilst challenging – was one of my highlights of the trip; the view of the sunrise from the top was breathtaking.

Some of my other highlights were undoubtedly travelling in and around Bali, so use your long weekends to cram in as much as you can! Ubud, Nusa Penida and Gili T were my three favourite places I went. If I could recommend one activity which you have to try, it would definitely be snorkelling. Before volunteering, I’d never done it before, but it was amazing seeing manta rays and turtles up close. In fact, any chance you get to go on a boat in Bali, take it. The seas and coastlines are the island’s most beautiful features.

So, if you’re thinking about doing the teaching volunteering programme in Bali with The Mighty Roar, you should absolutely take the plunge – even if it seems out of your comfort zone. It is one of the best things I’ve ever done, and has really given me the travel bug!
